SISU Means “Inner Strength”
The word “sisu,” (pronounced see-sue), can be loosely translated from Finnish as “strength and stubborn determination” combined with “stamina and courage” – especially when overcoming obstacles. At SISU, this definition appropriately explains their devotion to the design and development of premium vitamins and supplements. It also speaks to those who take assertive command of their health and wellness – people like their customers. SISU can help you release your inner strength!
To foster an environment where dedicated people produce premium products and promote good health.
Trusted Since 1980
SISU has been formulating and distributing quality supplements that you can trust for more than 30 years. Since the company was launched in 1980, the vision has always been to combine the knowledge gained from modern medicine with the wisdom of natural remedies to produce science-based supplements that empower the body’s disease-fighting abilities. Through the realization of this vision and an uncompromised commitment to quality, innovation and education, SISU has helped define Canada’s vitamin and supplement industry, helping active and health-conscious consumers manage their health and wellness needs.
Always a Step Ahead in Canada
SISU was the first to bring Ester-C – the Better Vitamin C to Canada, and its popularity as the gold standard in vitamin C continues to grow. Ester-C is available in capsule, tablet and powder form, as well as a daily vitamin drink mix called Ester-C Energy Boost. Ester-C is also a feature ingredient in several SISU products including Cold & Flu Rescue, Ester-C with Beta Glucans, and Supreme Multivitamins.
As an industry leader in the immune health category, SISU was the first company to launch Wellmune WGP in supplements in Canada. Wellmune is a unique, patented, natural ingredient that prepares the immune system to protect the body from “invaders” such as bacteria, viruses and the common cold. Taking Wellmune WGP results in fewer colds and flu, reduced down time, and improved overall health and mood. Look for Wellmune WGP in the following SISU product: Ester-C with Beta Glucans.
SISU products are manufactured in a GMP, Good Manufacturing Practises, facility. GMP is an overall quality standard enforced by the Health Protection Branch of Health Canada that includes raw material and product sourcing and testing requirements, record keeping and product tracking, manufacturing facility sanitation, personnel qualifications and more. GMP is a manufacturing quality standard that SISU takes to heart; they ensure that every company that they source ingredients from is also GMP certified, or equivalent. This enables them to maintain their high standards for providing high-quality products.
The New Canadian Government Regulations
Prior to January 2004, some of the company’s products, including all vitamins and minerals, were regulated as drugs and each formula had to be approved and issued a Drug Identification Number (DIN). The remaining products were regulated as foods under a different branch of Health Canada, following a separate set of regulations. Now all of their health supplements fall under the newly created category of natural health products and they will all need to have a Natural Product Number (NPN) including appropriate dosage, claims and warnings as regulated by the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) of Health Canada. GMP status is now mandatory for all manufacturers of products sold in Canada. As the regulatory change is extensive, it will be phased in over a five-year period with certain products, including those with a DIN, scheduled to switch to the new regulations last.
SISU has an extensive testing schedule where every product is tested several times during manufacturing by their in-house team of experts, as well as by independent laboratories to ensure identity, potency and purity. Their quality standards are in some cases much higher than required by the Canadian government. Any material found unfit is sent back to the supplier. At SISU, the quality and effectiveness of their products have always been their highest priorities and their record and reputation have reflected that.
SISU is driven by the science of nutrition. SISU’s New Product Development team meets regularly to discuss innovative new product ideas. They seek out new materials, review the latest scientific research and studies and discuss consumer requests in search of the next new and exciting product formulation to add to the continually growing SISU line. They are committed to providing the highest-quality products possible. They develop products based largely on evidence from either scientific literature or well-established traditional use; some products use a combination of these two. Reviewing the scientific and traditional evidence often involves reviewing dozens of studies along with other reference resources before choosing ingredients and developing a new product formula.
You will not find any trendy products at SISU; their products are based upon scientific research and not the latest craze. SISU strives to provide the highest quality, efficacious supplements available and occasionally they see an existing product in the market and improve upon it to make it even better.
Product safety is also a priority at SISU. They use only the highest quality of ingredients and they carefully choose ingredients and dosages that have been shown to have a low incidence of adverse effects. They ensure that their retailers and consumers are adequately educated as product safety is very important; the first priority is to do no harm.
SISU’s New Product Development team is comprised of an in-house Pharmacist as well as an Naturopathic doctor, among other industry experts, who all work closely together to improve product formulations in order to achieve the best product possible in terms of potency, taste and cost. Making superior supplements is not enough for them; they also strive to make them cost-effective for consumers.
